![]() One option would be to install CCleaner and/or Wise RC and have them scan but not fix anything. Glennbo, you would be surprised at the amount of gunk you have in your registry even if you do system restores and backups before/after installations. I would agree that it is always good to do backups before doing *anything* with your registry manually or via an application! CCleaner will prompt you to back up your registry before any changes are made, and Wise RC automatically does so. Now that I know a bit more about Reaper, I know that it didn't put anything in my registry anyway, but I have made hundreds of restore points, and restored hundreds of restore points over the years, so there's really nothing to be cleaned in my registry. ![]() I made one before installing Reaper too, and had I decided that I didn't like it or need it on my machine, I would have performed an uninstall, followed by a system restore. I don't personally trust any program to clean my registry, so I always make a restore point before installing any program. But anyway, all is working fine, so thank you very much.īy the way, I wonder if you or someone can tell me how I can post a jpeg image on this forum, as I have seen others do? I would like to post a screenshot in another thread of the latency checker DPC running on my Vista and showing quite good results. So I am not sure whether the registry optimising or the updates, or both, are responsible. But wow, to my surprise, the defrag thing reported that it speeded up access to the registry by 17%, and the seed of starting my programs now is very noticeably quicker, as is the speed of shutting them down.Ĭo-incidentally, MIcrosoft did an automatic update on my Vista, which I allowed, at almost the same time as I tried the registry programs. I didn't think it would make much difference on such a new machine, although I did uninstall quite a lot of junk that it came with - trials of Macafee anti-virus etc. ![]() ![]() Hey Mr Moon! I just tried your suggestions on my almost new PC -running CCleaner's registry cleaner (which I already used), then the wisecleaner, then the auslogics registry defrag. The combination of these three apps have really helped speed up access to the registry on my PCs which has made them run faster and more efficiently. I then top it off with a really good *free* registry optimizer, found here: No big deal, you just have to re-login to the sites and your cookies are re-installed no problem. I use these on production PCs and have not had any problems with them, except that CCleaner will wipe out some FireFox cookies required for use on some authentication-based web sites (i.e. The two programs together really help clean out the registry quite well and very safely. Try it out!Īnother *FREE* registry tool I use in conjunction with CCleaner (which *IS* awesome, BTW), is "Wise Registry Cleaner" which you can download for free from here: They also have a new defrag utility that makes you wonder why Windows doesn't include their stuff with their OS. I had used Eusing's Free Registry Cleaner, but it made a REAL mess of my files (it was recoverable, but not cool). Now I know a lot of people freak when they hear Registry Cleaner, but this one is mild, and it FULLY backsup what you are changing. What it does is, it removes temp files, cookies, and all sort of junk in windows and on the system drive in general & there's also a Registry Cleaner. I have been using CCleaner from Piriform for a while now and am thoroughly impressed.
